Letter From The President

To dismantle broken systems, the new presidential platform for ABWP is healthcare disparities and the matter of racism as a public health emergency. The Coronavirus pandemic has shined a bright light on the systems that fuel racial inequities in healthcare. Under my administration, ABWP’s community education and advocacy work will strive to address the disparate impact of COVID19 and common chronic conditions on African Americans.

I pick up the baton from my predecessor, President Sylvia Gates Carlisle, to continue our work in the area of maternal mortality in partnership with the LACDPH’s African American Infant and Maternal Mortality Steering Committee (AAIMM) and First 5 LA because Black women are still dying to have children! I wish to draw our attention to another issue plaguing the Black community, as well: Alzheimer’s dementia. The CDC warns that Black and Brown Americans in the United States will see the greatest increases in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias between 2015 and 2060. Women are already 2x as likely to be affected by the disease, so Black women are particularly vulnerable, but our efforts will challenge these statistics. We are honored to partner with the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s Los Angeles and the Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement in the fight against this silent epidemic.

For the Association’s members, we will continue to invest in the rich, under-tapped resource of Black women physicians through the Sister-2-Sister mentoring program. We will expand our reach by partnering with schools, and HBCUs in particular, to set up young professionals for a successful medical career.

In our callings to serve, we provide others with the resources they need to heal, and thus our organization and our society will excel. Serve, Heal, Excel: SHE leads with passion and purpose. Together we will serve each other, lifting as we climb. To heal communities and achieve health equity will require a commitment from every woman connected to this great organization and the mobilization of your best resources. The work ABWP will do in this season will be intentional. Sometimes it might seem messy, but sometimes messy is necessary to reach functionality. To excel means we will not only do the work, but we will be excellent in our delivery. I don’t ever claim to know it all. I need you. We are in the midst of a pandemic and racial unrest. Our people are dying daily! Our hearts must be moved on one accord so that we make the time to take on a crisis that is bigger than ourselves. This is legacy work. This is generational health building. Let’s build something beautiful together!

Thank you for trusting me with this precious gift to lead and serve the Association of Black Women Physicians..

God bless,
